Rest, transformation, fragility, strength, royalty...the royal lion - the Monarch, rests quietly, the monarch butterflies attend to him, gently covering him with his royal cloak and watching over his slumber. The background of this piece pays homage to George Stubbs 1762 version of his painting "A lion attacking a horse". The violence of his piece is in direct contrast to the peace and gentleness of my painting, the contrast showing that the lion can be both fierce and gentle, fragile and powerful.
